General Comments not specific to any category

•  If there is no documentation, the item will not be judged to afford the entrant the opportunity to better exhibit their piece and re-enter the next fair.

Stillroom Arts

• All entries must be appropriate to time, place and culture.
• Consumable entries without recipes and/or ingredient lists will not be judged.
• Entries with the potential to be poisonous will not be judged. Absinthe is one example.
• Document the process explaining how the entry was created.
• The use of non-period cordials is strongly discouraged.
• Documentation should be pre-17 th century.
• Document how the entry would have been used in period – as seasoning, medicine, etc.
• Do not enter kit projects.
• If the item is intended for internal or external use, the documentation should include the complete recipe, including a complete ingredient list.
• Test the product before entering it in a competition, except for those which are known to be poisonous or toxic.
• If using products which can cause harm (i.e. lye), follow all appropriate safety precautions.
• Any items which are poisonous or toxic should be prominently marked on the item, not just in the documentation.
• Items containing lead or mercury are not allowed.
• The complexity of the projects in this category is more often reflected in the research and presentation than in the items themselves.
• If materials inconsistent with the stated period of the piece are used, the documentation explains why the substitutions were made.
